Tagline: Sometimes there's a thin line between business and organized crime, they are that line.
Synopsis: The TV show follows the work, home life, and affairs of an office of lawyers (perhaps several offices) at a big international trade law firm. I'm still working out a number of the details, but the show would most likely be structured along a similar line as Mad Men, with work offering a backdrop for the characters to deal with some of their more personal dramas. Though it could also be much more along the lines of a generic TV law show.
The reason to do international arbitration law instead of the more typical criminal law, is that it 1. gives the opportunity to deal with eccentric rich people, 2. Provides a venue for sexy foreigners, 3. Allows the entry of exotic locals (though interiors could all be shot in Los Angeles, or wherever), 4. Provides interesting opportunities for cross-selling to foreign markets.
The cases would mostly take place outside of America or Western Europe, and would take several episodes, if not a full season, to resolve (arbitration law takes a long time). Examples could be taken out of the press such as: an Asian investment bank bought and then stripped assets from a large bank in a small Eastern European country, or a Russian Oligarch is suing a foreign socialist government for suddenly placing an extreme tax burden on his mining activities in their country (Russian Oligarchs make good characters)
Characters:
Jana xxxxxxx - The head of the local office, of Polish decent, but raised in America. She's a no-nonsense negotiator, most men who have dealt with her find themselves simultaneously attracted to her and slightly frightened. She has the habit of going to gigilos (which is a habit she might pick up in the first episode).
