Lady of the Saxon Court as Judith with the Head of Holofernes, Hans Cranach, 1537

At the Legion of Honor, San Francisco

My favorite part is the bored teenager expression.

For more in this series.

I was at the Legion last week, thinking the same thing about the Saxon lady’s expression, when a young woman came rushing into the nearly empty room, plopped down on the bench in front of this painting, and began frantically punching the keypad of a handheld device. I glanced at her, and just about fell down. The girl looked so much like Judith, she had to have been either a direct descendant or a reincarnation. She had the exact same vexed expression; and, just like Judith’s, her posture looked like she’d spent her formative years crouching in front of a computer. I wonder if they know each other…at the very least, they must be friends on Facebook.
